Anytime I talk about email marketing, the same two questions always come up: How do I start an email list? and How do I make sure the people joining my list are actually my ideal audience and not just random subscribers?
The first step in email marketing is simply this: start the list. Don’t overthink it, don’t wait until everything is “perfect.” You don’t need thousands of subscribers to see results, 10 engaged people on your list will always be more powerful than 1,000 random ones scrolling past your posts on social media.
If you’re brand new, your first move is to create a welcome sequence. This can be three to six emails that introduce you, share your story, and set expectations for what subscribers can look forward to. Think of it like rolling out the red carpet for new readers. From there, you can build out longer nurture sequences with timeless content that works for you on autopilot.
But here’s the part that matters just as much: making sure the people joining your list are actually your ideal clients. Otherwise, you’re just writing to an inbox full of strangers.
That starts with your freebie. If your opt-in is too broad, you’ll collect subscribers who aren’t aligned with what you do. Too narrow, and you’ll miss out on people who could be a fit. The sweet spot is finding a problem your dream client is already trying to solve and creating a freebie that addresses it directly.
Think of it like a bouncer at the door, it’s not letting just anyone in, it’s helping ensure the right people are walking through. And don’t worry about filtering too heavily at the very top. That’s what your email content is for. The way you nurture and serve through your emails naturally helps people self-select if they’re the right fit for your world.
Make Your Emails Work for You With a Rhythm That Feels Good
Email marketing doesn’t have to be complicated. I like to think of my emails in three simple energies: nurture, invite, and convert.
If I’m emailing once a week, I just rotate through those three energies. That rhythm gives consistency without making my list feel like they’re being sold to nonstop. It’s about building trust, not just pushing offers.
Set Up a System That Nurtures While You Sleep
One of the best things I ever did was set up longer nurture sequences that run automatically. This kind of evergreen content means I can write once and let it keep working for me for months.
If you don’t have a welcome sequence yet, start there. A simple three to six email series that introduces you, your values, and what people can expect from you is incredibly powerful. From there, add more timeless tips, stories, or blog content that will always feel relevant.
This foundation means I’m never scrambling to figure out what to say week after week. My core emails are already doing the heavy lifting, and my live emails get to be more fun, creative, and in-the-moment.
Focus on the Right Metrics (and Let the Rest Go)
There’s endless data inside email platforms, but I’ve found it works best to keep things simple. Focus on one metric per email type:
But here’s the truth: the best signals aren’t always numbers. Pay attention when people reply to your emails, mention them on calls, or reference your stories. That feedback matters more than dashboard stats.
And please, clean your list. If someone hasn’t opened in 90 days, let them go. A smaller, engaged list is far more valuable than a big, disengaged one.
Email marketing doesn’t need to feel heavy. At its core, it’s just an extension of the relationships you want to build. Whether you’re writing to ten people or ten thousand, your words can make a difference.
You don’t need to fight an algorithm every day to be seen. With the right strategy and systems in place, your email list can become the most impactful part of your business.
